    Understanding Polysomnography

Sleep study, otherwise called polysomnography, is a painless test done to assess sleep disorders in individuals. It is done during an individual’s normal sleeping hours. The test tracks the functioning of many vital organs during your sleep and records the brain waves, heart rate, breathing, the level of oxygen in the blood, eye movements, skeletal muscle activities, etc.

Observations of the sleep study can help a doctor diagnose the sleep-related problems or conditions troubling individuals. Polysomnography is typically done if you are experiencing sleep apnea, a condition where breathing stops and restarts abruptly.

    Types Of Sleep Study

Basically, there are two types of sleep, namely Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and Non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep.

You first enter into non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, where your brain and muscle activities relax, breathing and heart rate slow down, and the body temperature also drops. This type of sleep pattern is important for your body to build muscle and body and repair tissues. It also boosts the immune system.

After NREM, you experience rapid eye movement (REM) sleep for a brief period. During REM, although the eyes are closed, there is rapid eye movement, and most of the dreaming occurs in this stage.

The interesting fact is that a healthy individual will repeatedly have NREM and REM sleep cycles many times (around four to five cycles) during routine sleeping time.

    Reasons For A Sleep Study

A sleep study helps in the diagnosis of several sleep-related issues by analyzing your sleep patterns and when they get disrupted. Sleep disorders can affect your health. They can elevate the blood pressure, ultimately causing stroke if sleep disorders are left untreated. Some of the signs when doctors recommend polysomnography can be:

    • Sleep apnea
    • Loud snoring
    • Restless sleep at night
    • Some kind of seizures/ epilepsy
    • Frequent leg movements during sleep
    • Drowsiness
    • Feeling extremely sleepy during the day
    • Sleepwalking
    • Sleep paralysis

    Procedure In A Sleep Study

Usually, sleep studies are done in the hospital or clinics. You will sleep in a cozy bed arranged in the hospital and the room will be quiet dark and silent. You can choose to wear your comfortable night dress.

Many electrodes/ sensors are placed on your body in various places, such as the eyelids, chest, chin, scalp, etc. The purpose of these electrodes is to record signals when you are even slightly awake. It also measures the time taken for you to fall into a REM sleep pattern. A doctor/ specialized physician will observe you during your sleep and note any changes in your heart rate.

Some of the sensors used in a sleep study are:

    • Electrocardiography, which picks up the electrical activity of your heart.
    • Electromyogram, to track muscle movement of limbs
    • Electro- Oculography to detect the eye activity
    • Breathing sensors to analyze the breathing pattern
    • Pulse Oximeter to check pulse and blood level oxygen

    Treatments For Sleep Disorders

After a sleep study session, your physician will diagnose your issue and try to figure out the causes for it. Based on your condition, treatments vary. Relaxation therapies are the first recommended treatment option. It includes breathing and meditation. Then, there are behavioral and cognitive therapies to ease an individual’s mind to help them fall asleep more easily.

In some cases, medications are prescribed for improved sleeping. Natural remedies like using chamomile tea, lavender oil infusions, acupuncture, and having a healthy with regulations on diet and time of dinner are also suggested as a part of sleep disorder treatments.
