    What is Critical Care?

Critical care refers to the medical care provided to patients having life-threatening illnesses or injuries. It is generally provided in an ICU (intensive care unit).

A team of well-trained healthcare professionals, including critical care physicians, respiratory therapists, nurses, and other specialists, provide such patients with 24-hour care and monitoring. This includes the use of certain machines to constantly monitor the vital signs and provide the patients with specialized treatments.

    What is Critical Care Management?

Critical care management involves the organization, logistics, and procedures performed to take care of critically ill patients.

Priority is given to provide effective and efficient delivery of patient care which goes beyond medical treatment to obtain optimal treatment outcomes in the ICU or other similar critical care facilities.

What Will Happen in a Critical Care Unit?

The medical professionals in a critical care unit will use different types of equipment, like:

    • Flexible tubes and catheters either drain fluids out from the body or push essential fluids into the body.
    • Feeding tubes for nutritional support.
    • Intravenous or IV tubes to provide fluids and medicines.
    • Dialysis machines for patients having kidney failure.
    • Oxygen therapy to provide extra oxygen to breathe in.
    • Machines check the vital signs of the patient and display the readings on a monitor.
    • Tracheostomy or breathing tubes are placed in a surgically created hole that travels through the front of the neck and into the windpipe.
    • Ventilators or breathing machines move the air in and out of the lungs for patients with respiratory failure.

The machines used in the critical care unit help a patient to stay alive, but many of them could also increase the risk of developing infections.

It is important to have an advance directive in place for a patient in a critical care unit, which is a legal document or a type of living will that states the types of treatments the patient would want to or not want to undergo when in a critical state, which means that the patient is either permanently unconscious or on the death bed.

An advance directive helps the doctor and family members make vital decisions, including end-of-life decisions in case the patient is unable to communicate them.
