    Understanding Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infection affecting the lungs and sometimes other parts of the body like the brain or spine. This disease is airborne and is caused by a bacteria, Mycobacterium tuberculosis. TB can be treated using antibiotics.

TB can be life-threatening if left untreated. It causes damage to the lungs and other organs, leading to complications such as pneumonia, respiratory failure, and even death. According to WHO’s Global Tuberculosis Report, India ranks first in TB cases globally.

    Causes of Tuberculosis

TB spreads through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks, releasing tiny droplets containing the bacteria. Anyone can contract TB, but certain factors like weak immune systems (due to HIV/AIDS, malnutrition, or other conditions) can highly increase the risk of infection.

    Symptoms of Tuberculosis

The symptoms of tuberculosis can vary depending on the affected body part. TB can also be latent, meaning the bacteria are present, but the person doesn’t show symptoms or feel sick.

The most common TB is Pulmonary TB, which affects the lungs. Its symptoms include:

    • constant cough lasting more than three weeks
    • coughing up blood or sputum
    • chest pain
    • weakness
    • weight loss
    • fever
    • night sweats.

    Diagnosis of Tuberculosis

To confirm the presence of TB, a physical examination is conducted along with diagnostic tests such as chest X-rays and microbiological analysis. The most common diagnostic test is the Mantoux tuberculin skin test, which checks for a delayed-type hypersensitivity reaction to TB proteins.

Another method is the Interferon Gamma Release Assay (IGRA), which measures the immune response to TB antigens. If these tests are positive, further investigations, like sputum tests and chest imaging, may be needed for a definitive diagnosis.

    Treatment of Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis treatment involves taking a course of antibiotics for several months. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the standard treatment regimen includes a combination of antibiotics like isoniazid, rifampicin, ethambutol, and pyrazinamide. It is important to complete the entire course of antibiotic treatment, even if symptoms improve, to prevent drug resistance and the recurrence of the disease.

    Prevention of Tuberculosis

Preventing tuberculosis involves several strategies. The most effective method is getting vaccinated with the Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine, especially for children in high-risk areas. Other preventive ways are:

    • avoiding close contact with people known to have TB
    • improving ventilation in living spaces and crowded areas
    • practicing good hygiene, like covering the nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing.
